I pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible,
with Liberty and Justice for all.
Written in August 1892, by Baptist Minister, Francis Bellamy, the original Pledge of Allegiance did not include two key words. In 1954, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God" to the Pledge in response to the Communist threat that was prevalent at that time as communism is avowedly secularistic and materialistic.
